In the warm lagoons of Manihiki & Penrhyn in the Northern Cook Islands, the Framer secures a dome-shaped teardrop, heart etc on the inside of the shell (Black lip Mother of Pearl Pinctada margaritifera) The Oyster is returned to the sea for 12-18 months because the dome causes an irritation, the oyster responds by putting layers of Nacre over the shape, thereby creating this Pearl luster.

Surface characteristics can include surface blemishes such as pits, bumps, ridges, cracks and spots. Color is a matter of taste: it can range from deep black through silver grey and into white. Lustre is caused by the reflection of light from the surface. Shape can be classified by round, drop or pear, button (round one side and flat the other), baroque (irregular) and circled (ringed).
